I’ve had so much fun, learned new skills, performed in front of an audience and I even sang a solo!

PETE THOROGOOD
Musical Theatre Director

Pete completed his degree in music at Dartington College of Arts and joined the Community Arts Team at Exeter & Devon Arts Centre working on several large-scale community fire shows involving vast quantities of pyrotechnics and loud music.

He then joined Odyssey Theatre Company for their ‘non-western’ production of ‘Macbeth’ spending six weeks training and rehearsing in Bali before embarking on a UK tour. Pete was then invited to join the Royal National Theatre as a music director and actor for the Olivier award nominated: ‘Trackers of Oxyrhynchus’ by Tony Harrison – He spent just over a year performing the piece at the Olivier Theatre and on tours to Denmark, Austria and around England.

Pete then moved to Somerset where he worked for several years as co-director of Actiontrack Performance Company which specialised in collaboratively devised music-theatre for mainly young people. On arriving in Herefordshire Pete continued to work as a free-lance music-theatre practitioner as well as running and coordinating projects for The Music Pool and setting up Kilpeck Youth Theatre. He was appointed Course Leader for Popular Music at Hereford College of Art in 2007.

Pete describes himself as a musical jack-of-all-trades, has written and composed over 100 shows and 1,000 songs and absolutely loves working with the performers and singers of tomorrow!

DR MIA GORDON
Principle RSOCA

Hello! I've worked with people of all ages in different educational, community and professional theatre settings. I'm currently the Curriculum Leader for Performing Arts and Music at Hereford College of Arts where I also co-lead the BA (Hons) Performing Arts. I've worked as a drama and youth theatre leader at the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich, Edinburgh Acting School and the National Student Drama Festival. I am also playwright and director. I have written youth theatre shows for the Sherman Theatre Cardiff and the Lawrence Batley Huddersfield. Following its performance in London last year, Strangeface Theatre Company are touring my latest play Eli and the Golem, about the Kindertransport (which was when over 10,000 children were evacuated from Germany to Britain between 1938 and 1939). I'm currently working on an adaptation of the Beggar's Opera with co-writer Jack Hughes and composer Pete Thorogood. In my time I have directed pantomimes in prisons, physical theatre in bus stations, murder mysteries in hotels and Shakespeare in the park. I also have a Ph.D on the Holocaust and sometimes ghost write people's biographies.
I am passionate about empowering young people to express themselves through the arts, have fun and learn new skills. Despite what most people think, the creative industries are the biggest expanding jobs market in the UK and one of our biggest export industries. I would love to share with young people the different possibilities and routes there are to pursue a career in what they have a passion for.
